dbg.jpg |Salone del Mobile 2006: Tom Dixon
May 15, 2006 _fairs

Expressionist, geometrical and with an eastern touch, these are the words that Tom Dixon uses for describing his new collection. Ornamentation is an internal urge in humans and he embraces this philosophy for emotive sake. The new patterns are inspired by the underlying structure of things: woven textiles, chain-mail, microscopic cell construction, and have a protagonist role in the Plane tables, the Tall chairs and last year's Soft System.
Wired steel structures characterise the Link armchair and the new Cage light available in two different sizes.
One of my favourites pieces was the Fat Spot, I loved the prismatic polycarbonate shade internally coated with copper and the hand beaten brass lamps Beat Light. The Diamond Light is a large-scale pendant light in folded aluminium with anodised finish.
All the images after the jump.

March 22, 2006 _lighting

Paris based industrial designer Arik Levy has grown to be one of the most recognisable young designers around and I believe he deserves that popularity. His work is a perfect balance of innovation, material research and aesthetical sensibility. The lamp Handshake, inspired by a hand muff, was first introduced in a limited edition but later scaled down in size so it will fit larger manufacture scales at an affordable price.

Back in 1960 Achille Castiglioni, one of the greatest designers of all times, designed together with Pier Giacomo Castiglioni the cocoon lamps made of metal and sprayed fiberglass for Flos. Forty five years later Marcel Wanders pays tribute to the man he considers his artistic uncle designing Zeppelin, a pendant lamp made of steel and pressed crystal cover.

October 17, 2005 _lighting

Berlin based designer Stuart Haygarth has been working on design projects which revolve around collections of objects. The objects are normally collected in large numbers and assembled in a way that transforms their meaning. The results take various forms such as large one off chandeliers, installations, sculptural and functional works.
The Tide Chandelier in the pictures is made from a collection of clear and translucent objects, all collected on a specific stretch of the Kent coastline.

The result is a charming collection; Shadow of your Smile by Mochizuki (in the picture) and the Porcini Family by Jasper Morrison are my favourite models.

dbg.jpg |Luceplan
August 30, 2005 _lighting

Luceplan's 2005 collection is simply wonderful.
Designed by architect Paolo Rizzato, Miranda is a series of table, bedside, floor and suspension lights made of aluminium and blown glass. The diffuser is either opal or mirrored glass supported by a ring that holds the lampholder, the concepts true core. Miranda is a perfect example of Rizzato's distinctive design style, timeless elegant with a bit of an old taste.

A historical piece of Luceplan's porfolio, Fortebraccio, has been revisited by Paolo Rizzato and Alberto Meda and the result is just stunning. New colours, better functionality and some smooth radius have freshened up this contemporary design classic.

Mix is a sophisticated reading lamp with a lightweight frame that uses the new LED Chip on Board technology designed by the duo Meda-Rizzato.
